John C. Black, Jr., 79, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, at St. Paul Manor in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, He was born on June 22, 1945, in Shawano, Wisconsin, the son of John Sr. and Mary E. (Hickey) Black. John attended the Green Bay Diocesan Catholic Seminary and had fond memories and friends from his time there. He attended St. Norbert College and UW-Oshkosh, studying English and Library Science. He worked at the YMCA in Appleton for many, many years, always making conversation and discussing literature. He loved reading, taking walks, and drinking Mountain Dew.
John is survived by his sister, Mary Ann (Tom) Callum; brothers, Tim (Lori), Charlie, and Joe Black; nieces, Carrie (Bill) Grahn and Lydia Black; nephew, C.J. (Vicki) LaFond; grandniece, Claire Grahn; grandnephews, Alex Grahn and Max and Maccoy LaFond.
John is preceded in death by his father, John C. Black, Sr.; mother, Mary E. (Hickey) Black; sisters, Margaret LaFond and Alice Black; and sister-in-law, Mary P. Black.
John’s Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Sacred Heart Church, 302 S Main St, Shawano, WI 54166. John will be laid to rest at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Shawano, WI. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local church as John would have wanted.
John’s family would like to thank the staff at St. Paul (especially Stephanie and Christine) and Hospice (especially Micki) for their kindness and care.
