John Vernon Boyette Jr., affectionately known as "Johnny," passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025 at the age of 81. Born and raised in Lyman, SC, John was a man of integrity, strength, immeasurable kindness, and an infectious love for family, friends, and life.
John was a graduate of James F. Byrnes High School where he excelled in academics and sports. He obtained eight varsity letters in football, basketball, and track. John was awarded Outstanding Prep Player, Most Valuable Lineman as well as Best AA Lineman in South Carolina. John earned a scholarship to Clemson University where he obtained a degree in Civil Engineering, graduating in 1965. His collegiate football accomplishments included Team Co-Captain (1965) and AP First Team All Atlantic Coast Conference (1965). John was drafted in the 5th round by the Buffalo Bills. However, under the advice of Coach Frank Howard, who said, "You have a brain. Go use it," John pursued a lucrative career in civil engineering.
John had a long and distinguished career in engineering. He served as Chairman and CEO of Piedmont Olsen Hensley Inc. and President of Arcadis US Inc. John later returned to Clemson University and served as Director of Land and Capital Asset Stewardship for the University. Upon his retirement, he was named Emeritus Director of Land and Capital Asset Stewardship and was inducted into the Golden Tiger Society. John's professional and community services included President of the Consulting Engineers of South Carolina, Vice President of Economic Development for the Greenville Chamber, and Chairman of Renewable Water Resources Commission.
John was a devoted family man whose selflessness and boundless love touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He always put the concerns of others above his own and carried a deep affection for everyone in his life. His kindness and compassion will forever be remembered by those he loved so dearly. John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce Mencken Boyette and his daughters Ashley Frederick (Scott) of Greenville, SC, and Angie Sykes (James) of Abbeville, SC. His legacy lives on in his adored grandchildren Jason Frederick, Anna Frederick Gooding (Sam), Grace Frederick, Wilson Sykes, and Linsey Sykes. Preceding John in death were his parents, John V. Boyette, Sr. and Eva "Chris" Christopher Boyette and his sister Kay Boyette Willingham (Ken).
He found joy in life's simple pleasures and was happiest on the golf course, listening to bluegrass and gospel music, cheering on Clemson, and spending time with his beloved grandchildren at the lake. In his younger years, he enjoyed sailing and remained active in the Tiger Lettermen's Association throughout his life. On any given Wednesday evening, he could be found with the 'Porch Gang' at Thornblade Country Club, sharing laughter and camaraderie. His warmth, passion, and dedication will forever be cherished by all who knew him.
John's family invites all who knew and loved him to celebrate his extraordinary life. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown Chapel in Greenville. The Boyette family will receive friends in the funeral home immediately following the service until 4:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to Hospice House of Greenville located at 1836 West Georgia Road, Simpsonville, SC 29680.

My condolences to the family. As the first CCIT Consultant at CUICAR from 2008 to 2017, I had the pleasure of experiencing his kindness and respect whenever I worked on a computer problem he was experiencing or some software that needed to be installed. Computer problems don't always bring out the best in people but not so with Mr. Boyette, he would treat me with kindness and respect. My memories will always be fond when I think of him.
