John Michael Brannigan passed away October 1, 2025, at his home in Buford, Ga., surrounded by loved ones. He was 79. His death ends a brave and relentless 8-year battle against cancer that underscored his love of life. John was a member of NST Myosenji Temple in Silver Spring, Md., and his rigorous daily practice of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism spanned 45 years. He helped introduce many others to the practice of True Buddhism. John was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and worked as a conductor for the Santa Fe Railway and other railroads. John is survived by his wife of 36 years, Shirley Brannigan, by his beloved friend, Sharon Stevenson, by five daughters: Joni Weber; Tammy Hughes; Rachel Brannigan; Nirvana Martin; and Amber Mallory; and by his sister Martha Brannigan. He also is survived by a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of his favorite Buddhist writings states "When I look upon the past, I, Nichiren, have learned Buddhism since my childhood. I made a vow, for human life is transient. Breathing out does not await breathing in. Even dewdrops before the wind cannot be a metaphor. This is an uncertain matter for both the wise and the foolish, the old and the young. Therefore, I must first learn about the last moment and later learn other matters." (Gosho, p. 1482) A funeral ceremony will be conducted by Rev. Shojo Sakabe, Chief Priest of Myosenji Temple, at Flanigan Funeral Home and Crematory in Buford, Ga., Monday, Oct. 6 at 3:00 pm.
