John Robert Burns of Montgomery, Texas, passed away on January 22, 2026, at the age of 84. He was born on April 17, 1941, in Hayti, Missouri.
John served honorably in the United States Navy, entering active duty in April 1958 and retiring in March 1990. A Vietnam War veteran, he proudly served as a Navy Seabee. His naval career included assignments throughout the United States and overseas, including Vietnam, the Philippines, and Okinawa.
During his service, John was recognized for both heroism and sustained excellence. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V" for heroic achievement during combat operations in Vietnam. He also received multiple Navy Achievement Medals, along with numerous unit commendations, Good Conduct Medals, and expert weapons qualifications. His service reflected courage under fire, exceptional leadership, and unwavering dedication to mission and fellow service members, embodying the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
John was married to Carolyn Jean Dowdy, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage. He was the devoted father of Danny Burns (wife Rhonda), Robert Burns (wife Tammi), Patty Burns, and James Burns (wife Irma). He was also the proud grandfather of six and great-grandfather of six. He will be remembered for his integrity, quiet strength, and devotion to family, and for a life defined by service and sacrifice.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026 beginning at 11 A.M at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery near Bloomfield, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s's Children's Hospital.
John Robert Burns will be deeply missed and honorably remembered.
