John, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2022, at home in Centerville, Utah, with his wife, Cindy, by his side.  In 2020, John was diagnosed with prostate cancer and fought many complications following his treatments.

John was born on January 7, 1949, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Frances Blanche Reeder and Irvin Arthur Butler.  His mother liked to call him Johnny and he was called Johnny by most of his aunts and uncles.  As a child, John grew up loving skiing, swimming, camping and other outdoor activities.  John was involved in scouting; he earned his Eagle Scout and the Order of the Arrow.  John also volunteered as a camp counselor for a couple of summers at the Treasure Mountain Scout Camp.  John was an amazing example of hard work and loyalty to his 4 siblings: Dave, Steve, Rick and Dianna.

After graduating high school, John went to Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, where he received his Associate of Science degree in accounting.  There he met his first sweetheart, Kathleen Barker.  Only kissing Kathleen once on the cheek, he headed out to the Great Lakes Mission where he served a 2-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Soon after returning from his mission, John and Kathy were quickly engaged and were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple on May 15, 1970.  John and Kathy did not waste any time starting a family.  Robert John (Bob) was born and soon after they moved to Bountiful, Utah.  John worked as a shoe salesman in Sugar House and later was transferred to the 5 Points Mall in Bountiful, Utah.  Three years later Daniel William (Dan) arrived.  John and Kathy were living in a mobile home at the time, so they decided they needed a little more room for their growing family.  They built a home in West Bountiful.

John later took a position as Comptroller with Producers Livestock.  It was in this position John self-taught himself to program computers.  In answer to Kathy’s prayers, they were surprised and delighted to be blessed with a daughter, Sarah.  Eventually, the family moved to Centerville where they raised their beautiful family.  On October 20, 2011, Kathy suddenly passed away.  John knew he did not want to live the remainder of his life alone and soon met his second wife, Cindy Meehan.

John was blessed to meet Cindy and they lived a fun and adventurous life together.  The next ten years were filled with camping, UTV riding, traveling and lots of family activities.

John leaves a legacy of love, compassion and hard work.  John never sat still and would do anything for his children and grandchildren.  Family was his number one priority.

John is survived by his wife, Cindy, his children Bob (Melissa), Dan (Sherice), Sarah (Richard) Otteson, Luke (Ashley) Mattson, Hallie (Jared) Webster, and 16 grandchildren.  He is also survived by 4 siblings: Dave (Karen), Steve (Monicka), Rick (Musette), and Dianna (Jay) Lords.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Frances Butler, his first sweetheart, Kathleen, and grandsons, Cayden Butler and Anthony Waldron.
