I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

2 Timothy 4:7

John Frank Childs of Mount Pleasant SC entered into eternal rest on December 27, 2024. John was born in Albany, Georgia in 1956, the son of Billy Frank and Dorothy Childs. After the sudden death of his father, John, Ann and their mom, Dorothy started their lives in Jackson, Tennessee. John attended public schools in Jackson and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering. John then began his Chemical Engineering career with Amoco/BP, faithfully working for them for 42 years until his retirement in 2022. After retirement, he continued to work as a independent consultant Helping various companies with their Chemical Engineering.

John was a devoted follower of Christ which was always evident in his life. John’s deep faith as a Christian was a driving force, inspiring him to love and lead his family. You could often find John involved in tutoring and mentoring. He worked with the Mustard Seeds and Mountains Ministry. He was always ready to help with anyone to work and improve the world around him. The day he died, he was with his daughter helping put together Christmas toys for his grandson, Elijah. He had a special place in his heart for his men’s group, which has met together faithfully for the past 30 years. They are affectionately known as Table 6.

While chaperoning a children’s soccer game in 2002 he met his wife, Susan Mitchum. Their first date was over coconut cream pie and coffee. They make a sweet connection that day. John and Susan were married in 2004 creating a blended family of seven. John loved rock music, jigsaw puzzles and reading, but he was most passionate hobby, besides his adorable grand kids, was gems and minerals. John was a self-proclaimed “rock hound” and a member of the Low Country Gem and Mineral Society. He was the beloved ‘Papa’ to seven precious grandchildren who he loved dearly and they absolutely adored him.

John tragically died with his daughter, Kim Childs and his son, Andrew Childs. He was preceded in death by his infant son Matthew Childs, his father Billy Childs and his stepson Russell Mitchum. He is survived by his wife of 20 years Susan Childs, his son David Childs and his wife Kaeley Childs, his mother Dorothy Childs, his sister Ann Childs, his stepdaughter Rachel Chigges and her husband Nick Chigges, and his grandchildren Mason, Gabriel, Olivia, Silas, Elijah, Emma Grace and Lucy Kate.

A celebration of life for John, Kim and Andrew will be held at Seacoast Church in Mt. Pleasant on Thursday the 9th of January at 11:00 AM. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to John’s grandson Elijah’s Future Scholar College Fund at https://futurescholargifts.com/Profile/SMC07053278324/
