John Cokonougher Obituary

John Edward Cokonougher entered eternal life on August 16, 2025, at the age of 76. John was born to Calvin and Shirley Cokonougher in Lansing, Michigan on March 21, 1949. Raised in Marine City, Michigan, along with his sisters Mary, Linda, Bonnie, Isla and Myra, and his brothers Calvin and Paul.

John was very proud to have served his nation in the United States Marine Corps. Enlisting in the USMC in 1968, he served in Vietnam as part of the Delta Company. Leaving the Marines at the rank of Sergent, he worked in the automotive and manufacturing industries for many years, eventually becoming a computer-aided draftsman.

The love of John's life was his devoted wife of over 50 years, Betty. Together, they proudly cared for their home and property near Yale, Michigan, where they raised their sons, Brian, Joseph, and Daniel. They also had many pets that received much love and attention.

In 2014, John achieved a milestone toward his life-long dream of flying, completing a solo flight as he worked toward obtaining a pilot's license. Later he owned a para-plane, which he flew for several years. In 2015 John was received into the Catholic Church, which led to his involvement in the Knights of Columbus and participation in the life of Sacred Heart Church with Betty and many wonderful parish friends.

John will be greatly missed by his wife Betty; his sons, Fr. Brian Cokonougher, Joseph (Nicole) Cokonougher, and Daniel (Rachel) Cokonougher, as well as his cats, Oden and Munch. He was also loved and admired by his nephews and nieces in the Cokonougher family.

The family honors the memory of John and invites you to visit and share memories Thursday, August 21, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Yale, with scripture services at 6:00 p.m. Rite of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 22, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Fr. Brian Cokonougher, son of John and pastor of St. Andrew Catholic Church, Rochester, will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Port Huron.

Memorials are suggested to "Wishes of the Family".
