John H. "Pete" Costenbader, 84, died Sept. 4, 2023. A long-term resident of Virginia Beach and Hatteras Island, Pete graduated from Princess Anne High School and Virginia Tech. He was a Trust Officer with Virginia National Bank before moving to Hatteras Island. There, he and his beloved wife and partner, Ann, founded Hatteras Realty, Inc. They sold the business in 1991 and moved back to the Beach when they purchased the Costenbader family home in Little Neck.
Pete was a Founder and Past-President of the Little Neck Cove Civic League and Past-Chairman of the local Neighborhood Watch; Chapter President, District Director, and Life Member of the National Wild Turkey Federation; a member of the Virginia Wild Turkey Conservationist Hall of Fame; Past-President of the Back Bay Wildfowl League; Founder and Past-President of the Hatteras Island Chapter of Ducks Unlimited; and past Dinner Chairman and Regional Vice President of the Tidewater Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. His work with all these organizations gave him some of his very best friends.
He spent many happy years at Westminster Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay, where he and Ann enjoyed some of their closest friends. At Westminster, Pete served as Chairman of the Plant Operations and Maintenance Committee and the Dining Committee.
He treasured his time with his family, and had a lifelong love of the outdoors. His times spent hunting and fishing with his buddies and grandchildren were some of the best.
Pete was predeceased by his parents, Dr. John H. (Jack) and Hazel Costenbader; his beloved wife of 60 years, Ann Hill Costenbader. He is survived by his son, Bryan L. Costenbader (Carolina), daughter Karen C. Bradley (Mark); and grandchildren Nick, Drew, Noah, Joshua, Brooke, and Kent.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Westminster Canterbury on the Bay on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. Valet parking will be available at the main entrance. Donations in his memory may be made to the Westminster Canterbury on the Bay Foundation, 3100 Shore Dr. Virginia Beach, VA 23451
