John Hudson Crandell

Virginia Beach - John "Jack" Crandell, Battalion Chief (Retired) with the Virginia Beach Fire Department, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2025, at the age of 83. Known affectionately as "Cap'n Jack" or "Chief Jack," he dedicated his career to serving the community and rose through the ranks to become a respected leader. He was admired by colleagues and cherished by those he mentored, leaving a lasting legacy of service, honor, and compassion.
Jack was predeceased by his wife, Constance Crandell, and by his parents, Alvin Kirkwood Crandell and Elaine Lydia Crandell. He is survived by his loving daughter Kimberly Jones (David) and son John Crandell II (Tammy); his stepsons, Jeffrey Pierce and William Pierce; his sisters, Diane Najera and Beverly Crandell; his brothers, David Crandell and Timothy Crandell (Audra); five grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy. He will also surely be met at the Rainbow Bridge by his beloved canine companion, Chip.
Chief Jack's devotion to family and to the fire service community will be remembered with gratitude and respect.
