John Crookes Obituary

Crookes, John C.
CLARKSVILLE - John C. Crookes, 91, died peacefully at home on Sunday, August 17, 2025. He was born on December 27, 1933, and lived in Clarksville all his life. He was the son of the late Frank and Francis Crookes (Shultz) and beloved brother of the late Elizabeth Mason (Crookes). John was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, June C. Crookes (Sprague).
John worked for Clyde Leonard's garage, Hummel and Albert Motors, the Town of New Scotland, Diamond T of Albany and Orange Motors. He then spent 27 years working as an equipment maintenance supervisor for the NYS Thruway Authority, retiring in 1989. After retirement, he kept busy by helping his son at J & S Automotive. John was known to be able to fix anything. In the late '60s, he built his own snowmobile from scratch. That led to him working on other people's snowmobiles for the next 20 years. He also designed and built his own camp on Lake Champlain. John loved to fish. Every Memorial Day weekend, for 30 years, he went trout fishing at St. Regis with Quint Turner, Pete Schultz, Larry Gepfert and Bob Gepfert. He also enjoyed bass fishing with Art Flansburg.
John is survived by his children, Susan A. Crookes and Steven J. Crookes (Janice); his grandchildren, John P. Crookes (Wendy), Kathryn M. Barrett (Garth), and Kristine L. Fish (Joel); nine great-grandchildren, Steven, Molly, Chase, Allie, Alyanna, Cody, Haleigh, Peyton and Brielle; his nieces and nephew, Jill, David, Debra and Patricia; and his Lake Champlain fishing buddies, Tom and Barb Wood and Dave Miller.
John's family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Cheryl, his home care aide; Lacie, his hospice nurse; and Pat Mason, his niece.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 27, at 4:00 p.m., at the Onesquethaw Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Clarksville Fire House.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clarksville Fire House or the Clarksville Community Church.

John was such a good-natured person, always a warm and friendly neighbor. He was knowledgeable and helpful, often with an impish grin! We always think of him when we drive past his camp on the lake. Our sympathy to his family.

When I was born, Johnny was 11 and my mother and I lived with them for a couple of years. From then on I was known as "Little Janet". I am so glad I was able to see him one last time in May of 2024. Rest in Peace, my dear Cousin.

John is one of the nicest, most generous persons I've met. He was generous with this time, talents, and advice - all of which I benefited from greatly. I so enjoyed the stories about his many adventures, projects, and life in the Helderbergs. John left a beautiful impact on this earth and I will miss his spirit!

John was working on his camp, when I met him over 20 years ago. I had just bought my place down the road. When John first came to look at my camp, he was astonished to see that I had no electricity, no water, and no connection to the septic tank. No worries! I used candles, brought bottles of water, and was creative about going to the potty! We became fast friends and exchanged stories and worked together. I learned so very much from John. One of the first things he said, and then followed up on was... "Garsh, Nance, I could hook up your water, and then you could warsh!" We did numerous projects together, and he taught me so very much! We swam together, shared meals together and even happy hour.
After John sold his camp and started to decline, we still went for rides, which was his favorite thing to do. He declined, but still had his spirit. I´m just so fortunate, that I was able to see him, before my knee replacement. He stood up, we hugged, and kissed goodbye. I didn´t know, that it would be the last time. He will always be in my heart.

John was always willing to give me advice, whether desired or not. If I needed a tool, his garage and shop were always open (he showed me where he hid the key)! If I just wanted some company, he was always ready with a story or a joke. John´s memory of names and events was phenomenal and I learned a lot of hill-town history from him. I will miss him and probably always be looking for his truck around Lake Onderdonk so that I might say hello to him once again.
