John "Jack" Cunniff, a cherished soul known for his kindness and handiness, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025, in Pierre, South Dakota, at the age of 91. Born on October 14, 1933, to Albert and Dora (Fleming) Cunniff, Jack grew up to be a man of great character and warmth, touching the lives of all who knew him.
Jack's journey took him from the small town of Carrier Mills to Harvey, Illinois, where he spent his teenage years and graduated from Thornton Township High School in 1951. Jack's robust work ethic was evident early on, and he went on to dedicate nearly four decades of his life to Reynolds Metals, retiring from the same company he had served with loyalty and diligence.
His commitment to his country was as steadfast as his work, having joined the army on May 9, 1956, and serving until February 18, 1958. Jack's life was marked by love and partnership when he married Sonja Blalock on July 27, 1974. The couple's life together was filled with shared experiences and mutual respect until her passing.
Jack's passion for life and learning did not wane with retirement. He became an active member of the Opening Minds Through Art program at Countryside Support and Memory Center, where he found joy and a sense of purpose. The program was a blessing to his soul, and he cherished the opportunity to attend regularly. Jack's love of crossword puzzles kept him going 14 years after his Alzheimer diagnosis.
Throughout his life, Jack lived in various places, including Clarendon Hills and Darien, Illinois, before spending his final two years in Pierre, South Dakota. No matter where he resided, Jack's presence was a source of stability and comfort to those around him.
Jack's legacy is carried on by his loving family, including his children, Jason (Leah) Cunniff, and Zak Cunniff; his stepchildren, Tammy (Rolly) Betian, Jim (Lupe Montalvo) Painter, and Mary (Dave) Barnish-Siebold. His zest for life and love for his family will live on through his sixteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.
Jack was predeceased by his wife, Sonja, his parents, Albert and Dora Cunniff, and his daughter, Kathy (Cunniff) Cohan. Each of them held a special place in his heart, and he carried their memories with him always.
