John W. "Buster" Cupit

John Winfred "Buster" Cupit passed away in his home on July 17, 2023. Born in St. Louis, MO in 1927 to John William Cupit and Martha Ellen Rose Cupit. Buster grew up in Longview, TX and was one of 10 children, including eight boys and two girls.
Buster is pre-deceased by his wife, Joyce Heim Cupit and his son Guy William Cupit. He is survived by his daughters Debra Kay Plaxco, Terrilyn Cupit Werner and husband Alan, grandchildren Robbie Wood and wife BJ, Joey Tesch and husband Jeff, Cody Plaxco, Christa Kolts and husband Jeff, Scott Werner and wife Michelle, and 12 great grandchildren. Buster is also survived by his brother, Jacky Cupit, sister, Mary Kelso and many nieces & nephews.
Buster was a PGA member and served as head pro at golf courses in Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana. He purchased Longview Country Club in July 1964, where he remained resident pro until his death. Buster won numerous North Texas Chapter golf tournaments. He played on the PGA tour in the late 50's and early 60's. Buster had quite a successful pro career, including a 1-2 finish at the Canadian Open in 1961 with his brother, Jacky. His love for golf started when he was about 8 years old and he continued playing until he was in his early 90's. Buster was a 1945 graduate at Pine Tree High School and was awarded "Distinguished Alumnus" by Pine Tree ISD. He was truly a kind, honorable, honest man who was loved and respected by his family, his community and by all the golfers at Longview Country Club and around the globe. Go rest high on that mountain, Daddy/Grandpawgee/Uncle Buster. We love you and will miss you very, very much.
