John Jeremiah Dorney, 80, of Halifax, MA, formerly of Holbrook and Dorchester, passed away peacefully on January 1st, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
John was the only child of John and Ellen Dorney of Boston, MA (both deceased). He attended Mission Hill High School and earned his master's in education from Fitchburg State University.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, John carried the discipline of his service into his civilian life. He worked early in his career at the Charlestown Navy Yard and became an educator, teaching HVAC and refrigeration at Blue Hills Regional Technical High School in Canton, MA, for 30 years. It brought John great joy to hear about the successes of his former students, many of whom today thrive in the trades thanks to his guidance and encouragement.
John shared a beautiful 54-year marriage with his late wife, Mary (Lynch), his high school sweetheart, who now welcomes him in heaven. Together, they raised a loving family that continues to honor their legacy of strength and love.
A man of many interests, John was passionate about science fiction and amateur radio, a skill he honed during his time in the Navy. He was an active member of the Whitman Amateur Radio Club and was a proud member of VFW Post 6258 in Halifax, MA.
John leaves behind a large and loving family, including his seven children: Brenda Spinazzola, Debra Blair, Tracey McDonald, Laurie Dorney, Amy Ferguson, Katherine Cao, and John M. Dorney. He is also survived by his sons-in-laws, daughter in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, dear friends, and countless students whose lives he impacted deeply.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the family to honor John's life. A wake will be held on January 7th between 4:00 and 7:00 PM at Sullivan Funeral Home at 2 Maquan Street in
Hanson, MA. A funeral mass will follow on January 8th at 11 AM at Holy Apostle Parish- St. Joseph the Worker Church in
Hanson, MA, with a luncheon reception to be held at a nearby restaurant (details to be provided).
