It’s with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father and friend, John Wingate Edmund, Jr., age 79, of Hyde Park, Utah. He passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 14, 2025.
John was born on March 29, 1946, in Lumberton, NC, to John Wingate Edmund Sr. and Patricia Edna Prevatte. He always loved his mother’s fried chicken and baking and going fishing with his dad. He graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1964.
John met Linda Dawn Snyder while he was working for Sears. They dated about a year, and John proposed at the Sear’s parking lot. They were married at Wesley Heights Methodist Church in Fayetteville, NC on March 13, 1966. About a month before they were married, John got his draft notice and enlisted in the Air Force. Shortly after they married, they moved to Amarillo, TX for basic training. From there they went to Big Spring, Texas where they met missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. John had heard about the church and was eager to meet them. They were baptized about a month later on October 14, 1967. On November 16, 1968, they were sealed for eternity in the Mesa Arizona Temple and received their patriarchal blessings while there. Shortly after, Linda was delighted to find that she was expecting. Two months later, she had a miscarriage. John got orders for Vietnam and was sent to Denver for additional training. While in Denver, Linda discovered she was pregnant again. Linda returned to Fayetteville to stay with her mother while John prepared to ship out. While John was in Vietnam, Heather was born. John was a Supply Sargent and ordered air munitions. When John returned from Vietnam they settled into their happy home in Fayetteville, and had two more children, Johnny and Walter. John and Linda had many foster babies in their home. After caring for their foster baby, Steven, they decided to adopt him after a lengthy court process. They had one more child, Jason. During this time, John went back to college at Fayetteville Technical Institute where he achieved an associate’s degree in business while working full time as a retail manager and other odd jobs to support his growing family. John was then an insurance agent for 20 years. Later, John worked for the church as a facilities manager with Linda as his traveling “sidekick”. During that time, they moved to Florence, South Carolina for 10 years. They transferred to Clayton, North Carolina until John’s retirement in 2010. They chose to retire to Cache Valley, Utah. Sadly, after caring for her through a battle with Alzheimer’s, John’s beloved wife and mother of his children, passed away on December 1, 2019.
John served honorably in many church callings including Bishop, High Councilman, Local Seventy, and Stake Mission President. He had a large book collection and often stated that he was in the middle of reading several books at a time. He enjoyed family history and even traced his mother’s side of the family back to Adam. He loved photography and photographed several weddings. He seemed to always have his camera and video camera with him wherever he went. He loved getting candid shots. He enjoyed reminiscing with family and friends looking at old videos and photos. He enjoyed going shopping with Linda and building collections of books, stamps, historical artifacts, movies, and more. He loved keeping in contact with family and many friends.
John is survived by his two brothers, William Arthur Edmund and Larry Patrick Edmund as well as his children, Heather Noel Hess, John Wingate Edmund the III, Walter Carl Edmund, Steven Lindsey Edmund, Jason Arlan Edmund, son & daughter-in-laws, and many treasured grand and great-grandchildren. We thank his son, Walter, and wife, Jazmine, for all the care they provided him in the last years of his life.
