John was born on June 17, 1941 in Newark, NJ to the late Thomas Joseph Flynn and Veronica (nee: Hooker) Flynn.

John was an avid reader, and particularly enjoyed history and religion. In his more formable years, he enjoyed playing basketball and was an avid football fan. He and his wife liked to travel and like to go back to Ireland to visit. They have travelled extensively throughout the United States. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren; and often travelled to visit his sons, Tom and Patrick and their families. He is a long-time parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Lexington Park, MD.
