John Charles Gies
Manassas Park, VA
(Formerly of Bay City, MI)
Our beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend was called to God's home on April 28,2025. John was born in Bay City, MI on May 11, 1953, to the late John James and Margaret Ann Gies (Carmichael). John was the 2nd of 6 children with 1 sister and 4 brothers. He is survived by his son Kevin Gies and his wife Pam, Kevin's mother Barbara Keilitz, precious grandchildren Kendrick and Kolson, his sister Kris Hugo, brothers: Mike, Pat, Pete, and Paul Gies. Brother in-law Jerry Hugo, and sisters in law: Rain, Sherry, Sandy, and Deb Gies. As well as many aunts, uncles, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by father John and mother Margaret Carmichael.
John grew up in St. Stanislas Kostka Church and All-Saints Catholic schools in Bay City, MI and while he was not always an active member of the church, he practiced his faith with a deep connection to God throughout his lifetime. John graduated from All Saints High School and would attend Western Michigan University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in business.
John was a gifted athlete, and he developed a deep love with the game of baseball. He honed his skills as a youth until he was a true 5 tool player. After returning to Bay City after college, John started playing both slow-pitch and modified fast-pitch softball, primarily playing at Veterans Park in Bay City. John would soon become one of the most recognized and respected players in the area at the heyday of high-level softball in mid-Michigan. He would go on to help lead multiple teams to league championship and state tournament runs.
John worked in banking and finance for many years and furthered his education, graduating with an MBA from Central Michigan University. In the early 90's, John founded Greater Bay Cab Company, the first full-service taxi service in Bay City. The company was a success and grew rapidly, and John would go on to operate it for over 20 years before selling the name and retiring in 2010.
John was an avid sports fan and loyal supporter of Michigan teams, especially his beloved Detroit Tigers, followed closely by the Lions, Pistons, Red Wings and Wolverines. He followed every season with passion and shared this passion with his brothers Pat, Jerry, and especially his son Kevin. John was always up to date and enthusiastic about the games, players, and stats.
John also had a deep and spiritual connection with nature and wildlife, finding great joy in the outdoors and the companionship of animals, always appreciating the beauty of the natural world.
The Funeral Service for John will be held Friday, May 9, 2025, at 6:00 PM at Squires Funeral Home, 211 N. Henry Street, Bay City, MI 48706.
