John W. Goan, Sr., age 97, of Knoxville, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2022. He was born March 18, 1925, in Fannin County, GA to James Robert Goan and Sarah Flake Goan.
John attended Blue Ridge High School, where he was team captain of the state championship winning basketball team. Following high school, he graduated from Georgia Tech School of Engineering. John then went on to make a career in Pharmaceutical Sales. On December 9, 1953, he married his wife of 68 years, Ellen Marie Drinnen Goan.
John was a Navy Veteran who served in WWII and the Korean War. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a long-standing member of Central Baptist Church of Bearden. He volunteered as a driver for the American Cancer Society and was a member of the Harrisburg Volunteer Rescue Squad. John enjoyed being a lifelong amateur radio operator.
He is preceded in death by parents, James and Sarah Goan; wife, Ellen Goan; 9 siblings; and best friend, Joe Bryce. He is survived by children, John W. Goan, Jr. (Mary), Beth Davenport (Danny), Bobby Goan (Joni), Jennifer Goan; and grandchildren, Andy and Kyle Davenport.
The family will receive friends Sunday, May 1, from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. at Rose Mann Funeral and Cremation, 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919. A Funeral Service will follow at 5:30 p.m. in the chapel, with Rev. Mark Moreland officiating. Interment will take place Monday, May 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Edgewood Cemetery, 229 Gallaher View Rd., Knoxville, TN 37919.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central Baptist Church of Bearden, 6300 Deane Hill Drive, Knoxville, TN, 37919, www.centralbearden.org. Online condolences may be made at rosefuneraltn.com.
