John Gordon Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

John Franklin Gordon was born September 24, 1945 at 6:05 P.M. to Jessie and Katherine Gordon in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. John departed this life into eternity on September 24th, 2025 at 12:36 A.M. in Oklahoma City.

John was the second of two children, according to family history, with his sibling preceding him in death prior to his birth. John lived with both of his parents until they both passed away. John's mother passed away first and his father two years later. After the death of his father, John lived alone with his good friend, Jeff Gibson looking after him until he could no longer do so. It is unknown if John had any other extended family.

On August 6, 1999, John moved into the New Horizons Group Home in Guthrie, Oklahoma. During this time, John worked at the New Horizons Sheltered Workshop, where he assembled Magic Bait Products and also worked on the janitorial crew. He was an exceptional worker and he enjoyed his job and never wanted to miss work.

In 2019, John accepted Christ and was baptized by Elder Jerry Bowie at the Church of the Living God Temple #86 in Guthrie where he attended until his health failed and prevented him from doing so.

He was a very happy person with a great sense of humor. John enjoyed being around people and enjoyed spending time with his longtime best friend, Jeff Gibson. In John's spare time from work, he enjoyed watching TV, especially western movies with actor James Garner. He also enjoyed going to movies, listening to music, and going out to eat with his favorite restaurant being Del Rancho. John's favorite sport was football and his favorite college team was the University of Oklahoma (OU). He also loved the Guthrie High School football team (BlueJays) with them being his second favorite team behind OU. John also enjoyed attending their games and his favorite clothing to wear was either his OU or BlueJays sports gear.

In August of 2023, due to John's failing health, he was moved into the Northwest Nursing Center where he received extended care. Throughout John's stay at the nursing center, New Horizons continued to maintain regular visits with him which included birthdays. He would spend holidays with New Horizons staff member, Daisy Swift and her family at their home.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, October 3, 2025 at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, 220 North 1st Street, Guthrie, Oklahoma 73044.

Visitation for John will be held Thursday, 2:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M. at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.

The entire staff at New Horizons enjoyed having the opportunity to have known John and to provide care for him. He was "family" to us and will truly be missed.
