John Brooks Gould (Lawyer), South Paris, passed away on April 10th, 2025 after a long illness. He was 82 years old. John was born on Dec. 16, 1942 in
Lewiston, ME., to Leonita and Wallace Gould.
John graduated from Edward Little High School in 1961. He studied at the University of Maine in Orono where he was a member of the ROTC Program. He graduated in 1965 with a BA in history and Government. John was a Captain in the US Army Military Intelligence serving in Korea. He was honored to be placed on Special Assignment to assist The Secret Service in protecting President Lyndon Johnson During his visit to Korea in 1967. He later attended the University of Maine School of Law in Portland, Maine Graduating with a Juris Doctorate in 1972.
He worked as an Assistant Oxford County Attorney before going into private practice with Attorney David Whittier and later Dows Law Office. John continued his career joining Norway Savings Bank as Senior Vice President of Commercial Lending and General Counsel. He would go on to Establish Gould's Law Office in Windham, specializing in real estate law, business law and banking law. In his spare time he enjoyed teaching. He was an Instructor for the American Institute of Banking from 1982 to 1994. He was the recipient of The Teacher of the Year Award.
Public service was important to John. He was a member of the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce Board (Treasurer), Trustee of the Stephens Memorial Hospital Board (Chairman), Served on the committee that developed (the first in the nation) Project Graduation in Oxford Hills, as Trustee of Western Maine Health Care Board (Chairman), Corporator at South Paris Savings Bank, Served proudly as Chairman of SAD 17 School Board, was on the Norway Paris Solid Waste Corporation Board (Treasurer), was a member of the Senior Advisory Board of the Androscoggin Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Banking, served as The Town of Paris Chairman of Selectman and was a member of the Paris Historical Society as well as a past member of Kiwanis. In his retirement he enjoyed his time as a Trustee of the Paris Public Library Board. He donated books and movies for children until his death.
John had a deep love for the ocean and was an avid Scuba Diver. He enjoyed sports and travel. Coaching his children in youth league baseball took special importance in his life.
He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Victor and Roland.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Gould, His sons David and Michael. Victoria Ashfpheld and his Granddaughter Miranda Gould.
John was well loved and will be sadly missed by his wife and family and the community he served.
