John Gray Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Singleton & St. Pierre Funeral & Cremation Services on Mar. 23, 2024.
John C. Gray transitioned to heaven on March 20, 2024, at the age of 95. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7.
John grew up in Jamestown and Logansport, Indiana and joined the US Marine Corps after his high school graduation. At the end of his service, he came to Indianapolis with his wife and son. They lived with his mother on Cruft Street while John attended Purdue University Extension Electrical Engineering Program and worked as an apprentice. He was a proud member of the IBEW #481 for over 70 years and taught for many years in their apprenticeship program. John cared about passing on the knowledge and economic advantages of the skilled trade to others. His uncle Harold, who got him interested in electrical work, also introduced John to the Masonic Orders, where John served in many capacities since 1959. John and his wife were supporters of local and global charities, which he continued to serve after her death. John was also a volunteer in many capacities at many venues throughout his life. John's biggest passions were music, traveling and being a lifelong learner. He loved his family in a quiet "live and let live" way. John and his wife, Gerry, were members at St. Andrews United Methodist Church for over 22 years.
John was preceded in death by his wife Gerry and his parents Julia and Herbert.
Survivors include son, Mike Gray; daughters, Melanie (Bruce) Horste, Laurie Ann (Jerry) Brown; granddaughter, Stephanie Katz (Brian Mahady); and great grandchildren, Neely Katz, Jon Katz and Mylah Mahady; in-laws, Betsy Stephens, Jody and Dave Barnard; and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 2:00 until the time of the funeral service at 4:00PM on Wednesday, March 27 at Singleton and St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, 7602 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, IN. Burial will be private. Following the funeral service, the Gray family will have a short reception at the Sahara Grotto, 7620 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, IN.
