John M. "Johnny" Hammers, 85, of Smithfield Township, Huntingdon, went to be with The Lord on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College. Born July 7, 1937 in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late James Edward and Dorothy Isabelle (Ambrose) Hammers. He was united in marriage to the former Audrey Hummel on June 27, 1970, at the Abbey Reformed Church, Huntingdon. His wife of 52 years survives at their residence.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by ten children, Joani Marie (Hammers) Clugston and her husband, Norman, Cathy Fisher and her husband, Gary, Lori Hollibaugh, Jeffrey Willoughby and his wife, Melody, Linda Sneath, Robert Hammers, Michael Hammers, Thomas Hammers, Brenda Hammers and Joe Hammers; and two grandsons, Dustin Weko and Garrett Bilger, who he was extremely close with; as well as, numerous other grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two nieces, Debbie Bair and Kathy Huhn; two brothers-in-law, Richard Hummel and Danny Hummel and his wife, Jean; and a very special and long-time friend, Jody Brown. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter and grandson, Sherry Hollibaugh and Douglas Willoughby; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by his brother and sister, Jimmy Hammers and Shirley (Hammers) Logue.
Mr. Hammers was a member of the Community Chapel of Hesston, Huntingdon, where he had been a member for 25 years.
He was also a member of the Standing Stone Post #1754, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Loyal Order of Moose #223 and the Frank P. Hommon Post #24, American Legion, where he also served as a previous manger, all of Huntingdon.
Mr. Hammers attended Huntingdon High School, Huntingdon.
He entered into the U.S. Air Force on August 24, 1954, and served during the Korean War. He was honorable discharged on February 3, 1958, attaining the rank of Airman 2 nd Class, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. He was then transferred into the U.S. Air Force Reserve and was released from duty on August 23, 1962.
A passionate electrician by trade, Mr. Hammers was also employed for 15 years as a manager at Holiday Bowl, Huntingdon.
He was an avid collector of coins, stamps, guns and Hess trucks; and loved woodworking and reading history novels. He also enjoyed the outdoors, the ocean and warm weather; and especially liked hunting, boating, swimming and spending time at Raystown Lake. He was passionate about taking care of his property and enjoyed moving the lawn and admiring the sunflowers. Above all, he adored spending time with his family and friends; and will always be remembered for his friendly nature and willingness to always help others.
Friends will be received from 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, 417 Washington Street, Huntingdon, PA 16652. A funeral service will be held
at 12:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, with Pastor George C.
"Buddy" Baird officiating and military honors accorded by the American Legion/U.S. Air Force. A public graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, June 9, 2023, at Huntingdon Memorial Gardens,
Route 26, Walker Township, Huntingdon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in remembrance of John M. Hammers may be made to the Huntingdon County Humane Society, 11371 School House Hollow Rd, Huntingdon, PA 16652.
