John David Humphries, Jr., known affectionately to friends and family as David, was a beacon of kindness and selflessness whose optimism shone brightly throughout his life. Born on September 15, 1946, in
Atlanta, GA, David's journey through life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his loved ones and his diverse interests that touched the lives of many. He passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026, in
Austin, TX, due to complications from a recent surgery.
David grew up in the warm embrace of Atlanta's charm, where he cultivated a love for learning and an unquenchable curiosity about the world. His academic pursuits led him to The University of Georgia, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree, and later to The University of Louisville for his Master's Degree. A true patriot with a servant's heart, he volunteered for service in Vietnam and Laos with the Red Cross after being medically ineligible for the draft. His passion for justice and community service was evident in his long and fulfilling career with The State Board of Pardons & Parole for the state of Georgia. Retiring in 2015 as a Guidelines Director, David left behind a legacy of compassion and integrity, along with many lifelong friends and colleagues who deeply respected him.
Outside of his professional life, David was a man of faith and a devout Christian who lived his beliefs through his actions. His hobbies and interests were as varied as they were rich. An avid astronomer, he spent countless nights gazing at the stars, sharing his wonder with anyone willing to learn. His love for running and scuba diving spoke to his adventurous spirit, while his later years saw him enjoying leisurely walks with friends and neighbors every weekend.
David's ingenuity was only matched by his willingness to help others; he was the quintessential handyman who could fix and build just about anything. His willingness to lend a hand was a testament to his generous nature, always there to support others with a smile. His granddaughters, Amelia and Reese, were the apple of his eye, and he never missed an opportunity to be a part of their lives, instilling in them the same pride he carried within his heart.
Though David's beloved wife and best friend, Mary "Kay" Humphries, predeceased him, he leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his only daughter, Shelly Conselman, son-in-law, Marc Conselman, and his adoring granddaughters. His sisters, Lillie Nesbit, Demaris Miller, and Annis Rogers, will remember their brother with fondness and deep affection.
David's life was a testament to the impact one individual can have on the world. He navigated his journey with a gentle strength, kindness and a big smile. He never met a stranger and always had time to help. We take solace remembering that big smile, knowing that his legacy will continue to inspire and guide us. John David Humphries, Jr., smiled the biggest when called Dad or Daddy-D. He will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will forever be a source of comfort and joy to those who had the privilege of knowing him.
