JOHN STURMAN Obituary

JOHN STURMAN John "Jack" Sturman, a vocational advocate for the disabled and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2025, in Overland Park, Kansas, at the age of 93. Born on March 21, 1932, in Dorrance, Kansas, Jack lived a life characterized by his commitmentto helping others. Jack proudly served in the United States Navy, an experience that laid the foundation for his future endeavors and instilled in him a sense of discipline and dedication that he carried throughout his life. After his military service, he pursued a bachelor's degree at Fort Hays State University and eventually a master's degree from the University of Missouri. He met his wife, Karen, and they were married on May 27, 1961. They started life and a family together in Syracuse, Kansas, where Jack worked as a teacher/counselor at the high school level. In 1964, they and their 2 children, Jeff and Jami, moved to Washington State, where Jack took a position as a counselor and eventually the Director of C.O.V.E., a vocational training program for adults with physical and developmental disabilities in Everett, Washington, where they lived until 1976. The family then moved to Paola, Kansas, when Jack became the executive director of Tri-Ko, Inc., a not-for-profit agency serving individuals with developmental disabilities. He worked tirelessly to improve the lives of countless individuals within Miami, Lynn, and Anderson counties. Jack eventually retired from Tri-Ko in 1997. Jack spent most of his spare time linked to his love of sports by coaching and supporting his children and grandchildren in whatever they participated in. He was our biggest fan and supporter. His professional accomplishments were paralleled by his role as a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his loving wife, Karen, who stood by him through the highs and lows of life. Jack cherished his time with his two children, Jeff (Judy) Sturman, and Jami (Rich) Murdock. Jack was a proud grandparent to Tyler Murdock (Lara), Ryan Sturman (Paula), Lindsey Poblete (Dan), Kaylee Biller (Ryan), and Anna Winkley (Kyle), as well as a grandpa to 13 great-grandchildren. Jack is also survived by his sister, Peggy Bachman. Jack is preceded in death by his father, James Sturman; his mother, Gladys Sturman; and his brother, Tom Sturman. Jack Sturman's legacy is one of compassion, service, and love. Jack and Karen were active members of Hope Chapel Christian Church in Olathe until their later years. He will be dearly missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His contributions to his community, church, and family remain a guiding light, reminding us all of the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many. Memorials are suggested to Monarch Hospice and Palliative Care. Visitation will be held Monday, Dec 1, at 1 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life at 2 pm, at Hope Chapel,12480 S Black Bob Rd, Olathe, KS 66062. My deepest condolences to the family. Jack was my mentor. Hiring me was the best anyone could have ever done for me. But it was his wisdom, his knowledge, dedication, and his absolute love of the people we were serving, as well as caring for each and every staff member at Triko. I literally grew up there with Jack always helping and advising, even when I didn't think I needed his advice, i always did. Looking back I do not think I would be the person I am today if I never knew Jack,( and Karen) Thank you. I could share a million memories. You will be missed.

To the entire Sturman family my condolences on the passing of a fine man. The thought of Mr. Sturman brings back many happy memories. Playing football in the cul-de-sac with Jeff and Jamie (my best friends) as Mr. Sturman drew the plays with his fingers on the palm of his hand. I remember how much he loved the Chiefs and he must have really enjoyed their success these past years.
The Block parties we all shared. He was always kind and patient and Fun!
I remember a time that he bought your Mom a new bike which had hand brakes, I begged to ride it and probably against his better judgment he let me- down the hill I went, screaming when I realized my hand couldn´t squeeze the brakes- he outran me on that bike and caught me just before I would have hit the ditch and gone flying. He never scolded me or made me feel bad (I felt awful).
I´m sure you all have so many treasured memories and I pray those are of comfort to you now as you grieve.
