John Robert Janssen was born to Garnett Janssen and Marjorie Cobb Janssen on June 30th, 1949, in Lafayette Indiana. He passed away at his home in Greensburg Kansas on August 17th, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Garnett and Marjorie, and a brother-in-law, Jeffery Carter. He is survived by wife Lana, daughter Cassie, son Patrick, daughter in law Jennifer, his favorite granddaughter Adele, and sister Jan Carter. Growing up around Kentland Indiana John was active in school, sports, 4H, church, and many other activities. He had a large extended family and spent many hours with them doing all the things that cousins do. During this time John worked for his uncles Burt and Burl Cobb on their farming operation. This is where his love of farming was born. After graduating high school John attended Purdue University where he walked on to the football team and made the cut to join the team. He was always very proud of this accomplishment. It was at Purdue that John met the love of his life. A young lady named Lana Farlow caught his eye, and he eventually convinced her to marry him on August 30th, 1969. They were married for 55 years, and 351 days. At Purdue John earned his bachelor’s degree in ag economics, and Lana earned hers in speech pathology. After graduation from Purdue John and Lana moved to Manhattan, Kansas obtaining their master’s degrees in their respective fields from Kansas State University. After graduation from K State in 1973 John and Lana moved to Greensburg Kansas where John worked for K State as part of their farm management service, and Lana worked as a speech therapist for several rural schools in the area. In 1980 they made the decision to start their own business offering ag tax and accounting services. They also started their own farming operation during this time fulfilling a lifelong dream of Johns. Community service was always a calling that John enjoyed. Over 50 years in the area John served as the post tornado mayor of Greensburg, put in 30 years on the Groundwater Management District #5 board, Twilight Theatre board, Farmers Grain Co-op board, and many others too numerous to mention. While Cassie and Patrick were school age thousands of miles were driven attending sporting events, and other activities. In more recent years he was in the stands hollering encouragement, and constructive suggestions, to his granddaughter Adele and her teammates. You always knew when Adele’s “King John” was in the stands. John’s family had many names for him depending on the situation. Cassie’s favorite was “Papa Bear” while Pat generally used the widely known “Supreme Commander” to tease the man they loved and respected as their father. The family would like to thank all the friends that have reached out to offer support and condolences. In an area like ours we are all family, sharing each other’s victories and losses. No service is planned at this time.
