He was born on October 9, 1945 in Marion to Lewis E. Kirkpatrick and Doris F. (Edwards) Kirkpatrick. His parents preceded him in death.
John graduated from Jefferson High School in 1964. He served in the United States Air Force from 1966 until 1970.
He married the love of his life, Bonnie Joanne (Cheney) on September 26, 1964 at Friends Church in Upland.
John had formerly worked at Duval Mines in Tucson from 1972 until 1987. They moved back to Indiana and he worked seven years at Overhead Door and then was a truck driver for Dependable Transit from 1987 until 1991, finishing his career driving for McCammon Trucking until he retired in 2011. He was a member of the V.F.W. and involved with Build a Better Blackford organization.
John was passionate about drag racing, often spending his younger days at both the Tucson Dragway and the Muncie Dragstrip. He also loved relaxing in front of the television, with COPS and Judge Judy ranking among his favorite shows. Tending to his yard brought him peace; he could happily pass hours riding his lawn mower over the grass. He also enjoyed making memories with his family.
John will be sadly missed by his wife, Bonnie J. Kirkpatrick of Hartford City; son, John E. (wife, Paula) Kirkpatrick, II of Hartford City; daughters, Shannon M. (husband, Kevin) Pryor of Hartford City and Lisa D. (husband, Jay) Sandoe of Hartford City; grandchildren, Nicole Kirkpatrick, Teresa Kirkpatrick, Travis Ferrell, Victoria Kroon, Brandon Pryor, Jacob Kirkpatrick, Austin Pryor, J.J. Sandoe; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Phyllis Sparks of Hartford City and Betty Kirkpatrick of Hartford City; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 PM Monday, July 28, 2025 at Keplinger Funeral Home, 509 N. High St., Hartford City. Burial will follow at Jefferson Cemetery in Upland.
Visitation will be from 11 AM to 2 PM Monday, July 28, 2025 at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Donor's Choice
