Funeral services for John Lansdale, 89, of Brownsboro, are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at Chandler Memorial Funeral Home with Bro. Danny Bristow officiating. Interment will follow at Chandler Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Chandler Memorial Funeral Home.
Mr. Lansdale passed away on November 16, 2024, in Tyler.
John L. Lansdale was born and raised in east Texas. He has been married to the love of his life, Mary, for 70 years. They have four children. He is a retired Army reserve psychological operations officer and a combat veteran who served three tours in Vietnam with numerous medals and awards. He's a graduate of the Texas Police Academy and a state-certified peace officer. He's an inventor, country television special Ladies of County Music, and several other programs. He goes back to the Sun Record days and was introduced to Elvis Presley by his wife on their first date who was a student at Humes High School in Memphis when Elvis was a 17-year-old ticket taker at Lowe's State Theater and John a 17-year-old marine. He has produced a variety of albums and music videos for country artists in Nashville and songs for movies. One Titled Trimble as recently as 2018 for "The Projectionist" to be filmed. He has hosted his own radio shows and won awards for radio and television commercials. He was a writer for Tales from the Crypt, IDW, Grave Tales, Cemetery Dance, and many more. He co-authored Shadows West and Hells Bounty with his brother Joe. He has authored the following fiction novels: Horse of a Different Color, Novellas When the Night Bird Sings, Twisted Justice, and The Box. All are weekly as a must-read page-turner with constant action and compared him to Mickey Spillane the most popular novelist in the world during the 1950's. The novel Long Walk Home was a finalist of the year fiction nominee for the Indie awards. Zombie Gold received great reviews including a Booklist review that praised it as a superb story with characters that came alive for anyone who read the book. Kissing the Devil got praise as a pulp novel. All are in print. New Westerns Broken Moon and The Last Day was published in 2020 and a new unpublished anthology of short stories. His Motto: Never give up!
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alcee Bee "Buddy" Lansdale and O'Reta Faye Lansdale.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Mary. Brother, Joe R. Lansdale and wife Karen of Nacogdoches Son, Randy Lansdale and wife Joyce of Leesville, Louisiana, daughters Jackie Daily and husband Rick of Brownsboro, Pamela Dunklin and husband Scott of Tyler, Meleaha Morton and husband Craig of Flint, grandchildren Justin Lansdale and wife Leigh, Josh Lansdale and wife Nikki, Jimmi Byrd, Jammi Medley and husband Jeremy, Ricky Daily and wife Amy, Ashlee Hazelbaker and husband Mark, Mason Martin, Malloree Thornton and husband John, and Drew Dunklin and wife Leah, and 18 great grandchildren, niece Kasey Lansdale and husband Jonathan Levit and nephew Keith Lansdale.
Serving as pallbearers will be Ricky Daily, Keith Lansdale, Mason Martin, Drew Dunklin, Justin Lansdale, and Josh Lansdale.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA of East Texas, P.O. Box 132899, Tyler, Texas 75713.
