Marlene Phillips Obituary

Marlene Moore Kubitz Phillips, age 89, went home to be with her Lord, peacefully on Thursday, September 25, 2025, in Dallas, Texas.

Born on June 20, 1936, to Marshall and Evaline Moore, Marlene lived a full and faithful life as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marshall and Evaline, brother Marshall "Chuck" Moore and first husband, John Ray Kubitz. Marlene and John were married for 14 years before he tragically passed away in a commercial airline crash in May of 1968. At just 31 years old, Marlene faced the difficult challenge of raising their three young children - Annette 10, Scott 8 and Allison 2, as a single mom.

With resilience, Marlene dedicated the next 18 years to being a nurturing and caring mother. Among her many achievements, she planned and led two adventurous two-month road trips across the U.S. and Canada with her children, towing a 16-foot travel trailer. Together they explored Yellowstone, the Sequoias, Pikes Peak, Banff National Park, the Calgary Stampede, Vancouver Island and countless other treasured destinations.

In 1988, Marlene married Kenneth G. Phillips. Together they served others through Texas Baptist Men supporting missionary and emergency relief projects.

Marlene's faith was the foundation of her life. She attended Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) for 32 years and served many of those years as a Discussion Leader and Children's Leader, stepping out in 2019. She loved working with children and had a heart for the underdog-always ready with an encouraging word or an extra hug. Every morning, Marlene devoted time to studying Scripture, often journaling her reflections, stories, and spiritual insights. Among her many writings, she penned a poetic rendition of the entire Book of Romans in rhyme.

Marlene found joy in the game of bridge initially as a teenager and later achieved the rank of Silver Life Master.

For the past 28 years, Marlene made her home on Lake Palestine where she enjoyed peaceful vistas to the lake and created a gathering place for family.

Marlene is survived by her three children:

• Annette Scott and husband Randall, along with and their sons, Michael (wife Jacquelyn), Preston (wife Carly), and daughter Katrina

• Scott Kubitz and wife Jill, and his daughters: Jacqueline and Jenna

• Allison McKane and husband Mike, daughter, Stephanie Knight (husband Myles), daughter, Lisa Jordan (husband Josh), and son Brian Nye (wife Allison)

Marlene is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her great pride and joy.

A Visitation with family members will be held Friday, October 3rd from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Chandler Memorial Funeral Home, 205 Broad Street, Chandler, TX 75758.

A graveside service will take place on Saturday, October 4th at 2:00 PM at Mission Burial Park, 20900 I-10, San Antonio, TX 78257, where she will in interred next to her husband John Ray Kubitz.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Bible Study Fellowship International-a ministry Marlene faithfully served and cherished throughout her life. https://www.bsfinternational.org
