John J. "Hunna" Lattof, 85, of Gloucester passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 29th. He was the beloved husband of Jeanette T. (Ciaramitaro) Lattof with whom he shared 65 cherished years of marriage.
John was born in Gloucester on November 12, 1939, the son of the late Mitch and Mary (Albert) Lattof.
John attended and was a multi-sport athlete both at St. Ann's and Gloucester High Schools.
He owned and operated the House of Mitch and was famous for his Free Friday Fish Fry's and daily card games.
There was nothing Hunna enjoyed more than hanging out with his family and lifelong friends, whether it was playing cards at Uncle Moe's, the Pilot house, and Mitch's, or enjoying a round of golf at his second home, Bass Rocks Golf Club. Hunna never met a golf course he would not play at, be it close to home or across the country.
Most of all John was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved having family cookouts, and was very proud of his smoking, barbequing and frying techniques.
He will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.
In addition to his wife Jeanette, he is survived by his children, Mitch Lattof and wife Wendi, Maria Madden and her husband Dick, Anthony Lattof and his longtime companion Linda Allen, Karen Psaledas and her husband Pete; his grandchildren, Jonathan Lattof and longtime companion Emily Brown, Michelle Moris and her husband Daniel, John Hume and his wife Melanie, Aaron Hume, Anthony Lattof and his companion Emily Murray, Jenelle Byerly and her husband Ben, and his two treasured great-grandsons, Leo Moris and Blake Byerly.
John was predeceased by his parents, Mitch and Mary and his brother, Thomas Lattof.
A burial was held privately. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Donations may be made in John's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959 or online at stjude.org or Saint Vincent de Paul Society, c/o Holy Family Parish, 60 Prospect Street, Gloucester, MA 01930.

What a loss! Johnny was a wonderful happy friend to all the regulars at Mitch´s including myself. I was there in the wild 70´s when the fish fry´s first started. It was just us locals at first but quickly became an event for anyone and everyone.

Captain Tuna was always there playing cribbage with his friends as well. The respect for Johnny and his Dad was evidenced by us all. Sometimes at night Tuna would fall asleep behind the bar and we would get our own beers. No one ever stole one, we would simply write our name and what we drank on a chit. Then pay up later!

Such a wonderful place. Johnny was a very special man to me, more of a friend than many others. The first stop after a trip fishing was Mitch´s whether we had been out a day or two or a week, or more.

Johnny will be missed and remembered fondly by me as a happy easy going friend; and by all that entered The Old Oare House!

RIP Johnny!!
