John Michael Mangogna, age 67, was born and raised in Long Branch, New Jersey. He eventually became a resident of Brick Township in 1990, where he lived out the rest of his life. John had many passions in life including playing the drums. He played wherever and whenever he could, with his most recognized band being Rockin' On. He also loved to cook and would cook for anyone who needed to eat. None of these passions, however, trumped the love he had for his family and above all Jesus. John instead, used these gifts to serve his Lord and Savior. He became a member of the worship team at Fellowship Chapel that eventually led to him becoming the worship leader. In 2003, John was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He did not let this break him down but instead used this opportunity to share his love for Christ with anyone who would listen. He went back to school (receiving straight A's) and became a Certified Medical Assistant. During that time, he underwent chemotherapy and eventually a stem cell transplant. His love for his family, positive attitude and dedication to God never wavered no matter how sick he was. John was a true testament to God. John peacefully went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by his family, both blood and spiritual, on Sunday, February 6th, 2022. "He fought the good fight and has now received his crown of righteousness."
John is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Cathy Mangogna; his daughter Donielle Gawlik and her husband Robert; his son Jonathan Mangogna and his significant other Dilara; his daughter Lindsey Smith and her husband R.J.; and his granddaughters Gabriella and Samantha Gawlik. He is also survived by his sister Suzanne Edgar; his sister Sondra Attritdge; sister Joanne Cattalona; mother-in-law Genevieve Johnson; sister-in-law Barbara Blank; brother-in-law Thomas Johnson and brother-in-law Scott Johnson. He is also survived by countless beloved nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Gisela Mangogna and brother-in-law John Edgar.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Saturday, February 12, 2022, from 10 AM- 1 PM, with a service beginning at 12:15 PM at Orender Family Home, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan, NJ 08736. I knew John for only months but no other musician I have ever known, has left such an impact on my life as John has. His dedication to the Savior, through the gift of music that God gave him, has left a lasting legacy for me and any other musician to follow. He loved and served Jesus with his gift and also us, his church family. John, "I thank my God upon every remembrance of you" (Phil. 1:3)
