It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Dr. John Tyler Mauldin, Jr. on September 4, 2025, at the age of 77.
John was born in Atlanta, GA on February 28, 1948. He graduated from high school at Tennessee Military Academy and entered the army serving in Vietnam where, wounded in combat, he lost his left foot. After returning from Vietnam, John entered the University of West Georgia and graduated with both a Bachelors' and Masters' Degree in Humanistic Psychology. He worked as a Master's level psychologist for several years before attending the University of Georgia earning his PhD and becoming a licensed psychologist. John maintained a full-time private practice during which he authored several books and workbooks on Life Patterns before retiring in 2017.
John never considered his handicap as a disability when he returned from Vietnam. He continued to play tennis, golf, occasionally water skiing, and earning a Brown Belt in Aikido. In 2007 he was awarded the International Budo Renami, the Daniel Rich Memorial Award, for his achievement in Aikido.
John had an active retirement authoring The Orb, a novel awarded the BRAG by the Book Reader's Appreciation Group, and continuing his involvement with the Ruth House, a Christ-centered residential recovery program for women battling substance abuse. In retirement John also became a skilled, dedicated fly fisherman earning Certified Casting Instructor with Fly Fishers International. He became involved with a local veteran's group where programs for veterans created under his leadership as president have received numerous recognitions. In 2024 he was honored by the Veterans Fly Fishing organization for outstanding and dedicated service. In 2025, the Georgia Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized him with the Outstanding Veteran Volunteer award for service to veterans and he was nominated for membership in the Georgia Veterans' Hall of Fame.
John is survived by his wife, Jeanne Harris Mauldin; son, John Randall Mauldin; sister, Elizabeth Harman Mauldin (partner Lou Ellen Gibson), brother, Thomas Charles Mauldin (wife Elaine); and nephew, Christopher Harvard (wife Melanie and daughter Catherine). He is preceded in death by his mother, Anne Scott Harman Mauldin; his father, John Tyler Mauldin, MD; and his sister, Anne Scott Mauldin Harvard.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Big Canoe Chapel on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 4:00 pm.
To honor, celebrate, and continue John's love of caring for and helping others, the family requests donations in lieu of flowers to:
