Kyle Messerschmidt, 34, of Indianapolis, passed away on August 9, 2025, after a four-year battle with brain cancer, with his loved ones at his side. He was born on March 26, 1991, at Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville, the cherished son of John and Deb. On October 12, 2024, he was united in marriage with his soulmate, Caitlin Lischer. He was a 2009 graduate of Batesville High School and a 2013 graduate of Indiana University with a degree in Computer Science. Until his illness forced him to retire, he was a software developer for McAllister CAT in Indianapolis. An ardent gamer, he loved video and board games. Caitlin is also a gamer, and any time you visited them you were coerced into playing some overly complex board game that most Ph.D.'s would struggle to understand. He enjoyed bringing new games to parties and teaching others how to play the games he loved. Kyle had a kind heart, great sense of humor, and an infectious smile. He went out of his way to help people. He was great with little kids, as his younger cousins and nephews will attest. During his illness, he never complained, always "felt fine" when asked, no matter how much pain he was in. To the end, he was more worried about the people around him than himself. While cancer took him too soon, the memories of him will last forever. He enjoyed traveling with Caitlin and was an avid Colts fan, able to name all the players with stats and opinions on their abilities. He spent his youth playing soccer, running track, and running the 5K's in the local circuit. He also loved orangutans and could tell you all of their names at the Indianapolis Zoo and traits about each one. In addition to his wife and parents, Kyle is survived by his grandmother, Ruth Messerschmidt; one brother, Chris Messerschmidt; one sister, Cassandra (Akshay) Sinha; and four nephews, Jonathan (Mikayla), Logan, Jai, and Luca; and one great-nephew, Wyatt. He is also survived by his father-in-law, Eric Lischer, and numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Leroy Messerschmidt; maternal grandfather, Ed Bruce; one uncle; and several cousins. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to The National Brain Tumor Society (National Brain Tumor Society / Kyle Messerschmidt) or Batesville EMS. Contributions can be made at the visitation or by mailing them to Meyers Funeral Home, PO Box 202, Batesville, IN 47006. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Meyers Funeral Home in Batesville, with a Rosary Service prior at 9:45 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anthony's Church in Morris following at 12:30 p.m. Please feel free to leave a memory or message of comfort for Kyle's family in the online guestbook.
