John Metzner Obituary

Dr. John J. Metzner

June 23, 1932 - November 15, 2025

State College, Pennsylvania - Dr. John J. Metzner, a revered professor, and a passionate learner, passed away on November 15, 2025, at the age of 93 in State College, PA, due to pneumonia as a complication of vascular dementia. Born on June 23, 1932, in New York City, John's life was a testament to his analytical mind, kind spirit, and indomitable intelligence.

John's academic journey was nothing short of extraordinary. He earned his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering in 1953, followed by a Master of Electrical Engineering in 1954, and later his Doctor of Engineering Science in 1958, all from New York University. His dedication to the field of computer science and engineering led him to a distinguished career as a research scientist at NYU, where he worked from 1958 to 1967. He then transitioned to academia, teaching at NYU (1968-1974), Wayne State University (1974-1980), Oakland University (1980-1986), and finally at Penn State University (1986-2014) where he retired and earned the status of Professor Emeritus.

His contributions to the field were immense. As an author of over 90 publications and the seminal book "Reliable Data Communications," John left a legacy of knowledge that continues to influence the discipline. His commitment to advancing technology was evident in his focus on reliable and efficient data communication, vector decoding methods, and reliable multicast. As an IEEE Journal Fellow and editor, John's expertise was widely recognized and respected.

Beyond his professional accolades, John was a man of varied interests. He had a lifelong passion for sports, playing volleyball with a youthful vigor well into his seventies. His athleticism also shone through in swimming, basketball, and baseball. A devoted fan of Penn State football, he never missed a game.

John's love for stamp collecting revealed his meticulous and patient nature. Over the years, he curated an impressive collection that was a source of great joy and pride. His green thumb was evident in the gardens he cultivated, first in the limited space of New York City and later in the more expansive grounds of his homes in Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Though he only dabbled in painting, the few pieces John created displayed a remarkable talent and a creative eye. His ability to see beauty in the world around him was mirrored in his appreciation for the outdoors and the tranquility of nature. After retirement, John and his wife, Ida, spent the cold Pennsylvania winters in Venice, FL, trading snow for sunshine and good times.

John's passing is deeply felt by his family, including his beloved wife of 23 years, Ida Balashova; his brother, Frederick Metzner; his sons, Adam J. and Mark S. Metzner; and his daughter, Samantha C. Baker. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Jeanette Metzner; and his ex-wife, Barbara Metzner. Each of them cherished John in their own way, remembering him as a pillar of strength, wisdom, and love.

Dr. John J. Metzner's legacy is one of intellectual curiosity, personal passion, and a life lived with kindness and grace. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him, and his contributions to the field of computer science and engineering will endure for generations to come. John was a true embodiment of what it means to live a life dedicated to learning, loving, and leaving the world a better place than one found it.

Friends will be received on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 10 to11 a.m. at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College. A funeral service will immediately follow with Father Ignatius Hunter officiating.
