Richard R. Merrell, 84, of Namquid Drive, Warwick, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side on Saturday, February 21, 2026. He was the beloved husband of Elisabeth (Lisa) Y. (Jones) Merrell who was his partner in all ways for over 50 years. Born in
Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late William J. and Elisabeth (Mason) Merrell. He is survived by his wife, his greatly loved Jack Russell, Hayden, his brother and an extended community of family and friends. He was a good man and a good friend to many throughout his life and he will be greatly missed.
Known professionally as Travis Merrell, Richard was a professional actor, writer, teacher, drama therapist and mental health counselor. He graduated from LaSalle University (PA), attended Lesley University's graduate program in Expressive Therapies and received his Master's Degree in Drama Therapy from New York University in 1997. His love of the theatre and acting led him to drama therapy and his passion for it fueled his desire to help others heal from trauma and achieve personal change and growth. Richard brought his intellect, his belief in our power to change, his ability to join with another in their healing process, and his compassion to his engagement with others and his therapeutic work with teens, veterans, individuals living with mental health disorders, prisoners and other often marginalized people.
Richard loved his Jack Russell terriers, Lucy, Sedona and Hayden the Harper. Lisa requests that those wishing to make a donation in his memory contact Jacks Galore Jack Russell Terrier Rescue in Massachusetts (jacksgalore.org) or Our Companions Animal Rescue & Sanctuary in Connecticut (ourcompanions.org). Helping to continue the important work of these two wonderful animal rescues will keep Richard alive in our hearts and in the world.
At Richard's request, his services and burial will be private. A celebration of his life is planned for this summer.
