John P. Meyer passed away in the early morning hours of April 3, 2025, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, with members of his family by his side.
John was born in Chelsea, MA, on February 20, 1953, to Paul and Rolande Meyer. He spent his childhood primarily in Pennsylvania and Maryland and attended Bishop McNamara Parochial High School in Forestville, MD. After graduating, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served with dedication for over 20 years, retiring as a Cryptologic Technician Administration First Class.
A few of the many places he served with pride include Honolulu, HI; Washington, DC; Orlando, FL; Edzell, Scotland; and Weymouth, MA. He received numerous honors for his faithful service. Even decades later when asked what he did in the Navy, he'd just smile and say it was either still classified or not relevant enough to bother explaining.
While stationed in Washington, DC, John met and married June DeSimone. Together, they raised two daughters: Julie (and husband, AJ) Saganich of Seabrook, NH, and Jennifer Meyer of New York City. Additionally, John leaves behind his beloved grandson, the light of his life, Albie Saganich, and his one hope for having a professional athlete in the family. He is also survived by his brother, Michael (and wife, Susan) Meyer, nephews Andrew and David Meyer; and niece Molly Meyer all of Plymouth, MA. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Daniel and Philip Meyer.
After retiring from the Navy and ending his career with the United States Postal Service, John settled in Amesbury, MA, and later Seabrook, NH. He enjoyed spending time with family and could always be found with a bowl of snacks cheering on his favorite sports teams which included all Boston/New England teams, the Washington Commanders, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. Most importantly, John would drop everything to help those he loved—even if it meant missing the final seconds of overtime with his team down by one and no timeouts left.
John had a special way with animals—pets were naturally drawn to him, and they were the only ones ever allowed to interrupt his sports games. His cat Tucker and grand-pups Livvy, Conan, and Ferdinand already miss being spoiled endlessly by him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MSPCA at Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, MA, or The Homeland Heroes Foundation.
Please also think of John every time you root for his favorite sports teams, eat a big helping of mashed potatoes, watch a police procedural, sip a hot Dunkin’ coffee no matter the weather, or nap with your pets. John will be missed deeply by all.
