John Mirabelli passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, January 18, 2025. He celebrated his 95th birthday just 2 weeks prior.
He was born at home in Union City to his loving parents, Salvatore and Assunta Mirabelli. They moved to West New York when he was a young boy. He attended PS#5 elementary school and Memorial High School, where he played football and baseball.
After graduation, John began working with his dad and brothers in the family business, T & M Embroidery in WNY. At age 40, the business was sold and he embarked on a new career as a liquor salesman for about 10 years. During the 70's, John served on the WNY Rent Control Board and WNY Parking Authority Board. Around 1980, he was hired as the Executive Director of the Parking Authority; he retired after 25 years and served as a consultant for a few more years. He was also a long-time, dedicated member of the WNY Kiwanis Club, serving as President, VP and Treasurer for many years. He was also the Kiwanis liaison for the Memorial HS Key Club, the student club associated with Kiwanis.
John was too young to serve in WW2 but as a young husband and father, he served his weekends at the Brooklyn Naval Yard after enlisting in the US Naval Reserves.
John was an avid NY Yankee and NY Giants fan as well as a Giants season-ticket holder since 1958 through the good times and the bad.
John was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Frank and Rosario, his sister Carmela, all his cousins and former wife Marietta. He was the last of his generation.
He is survived by his beloved daughter Donna, his favorite son-in-law Rick Saltarelli (a joke since he was his only son-in-law), his loving sons Steven and Jeff (Rosie). He was a devoted Grandpa to Steven (Amanda), Craig, Kristin and Talia (Tim) as well as Nonno to his great-grandchildren Eliana, Steven John III, Tyler and Julianna. He is also survived by his loving companion, Margaret Macali and his dear high school friend Bobby Aiello, as well as his many nephews, nieces and great nephews/nieces.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made online to the Secaucus Rotary Foundation at SecaucusRotary.org or checks can be mailed to PO Box 1094, Secaucus, NJ 07096-1094.
