It was my great privilege and joy to get to know John and share his friendship when he lived in in New Zealand. I first got to know John in a professional capacity - he was Director of Market Supervision at the NZ Securities Commission and I was a business journalist covering the financial and securities markets. John brought a mix of street smarts, a depth of experience of international capital markets and unparalleled legal expertise, coupled with a burning desire to ensure the markets were both fair and efficient. It's fair to say he ruffled a few feathers! Before long we became firm friends and shared many a pleasant evening at Molly Malone's pub in Wellington having a few drinks and enjoying the music. My wife and I also spent several enjoyable Saturday evenings at John's apartment - we would do the cooking and John would provide the wine. John was a loyal friend whose company and wise counsel I always valued. I will greatly miss John, his optimism, generosity and enthusiasm for life. Anthony Davies.

It was my honor to know John and become his friend. We played tennis together, introduced our families and compared our vintage BMWs. To say I’ll miss him is an understatement.
