John David Phillips (85) passed away 2/7/26 at IU North Hospital. He lived most of his life in Muncie, born on November 13, 1940. He is survived by his wife Marilyn (married 61 yrs), daughters Jennifer Ward (Mike) and Jodi Deistler (Ron), grandchildren Emily (Brian), Caleb (Kelsey) , Anna (Ross), Aaron (Laura), Kyle (Annie) and Kelsey, great grandchildren Landon and Stevie. Preceded in death by his parents, Harrell and Pat Phillips and daughter Debbie (age 5). Mr. Phillips began his education at Emerson Elementary School, McKinley Junior High School and Muncie Central High School, where he graduated in 1958. He attended Ball State University earning BA, MS and EDS degrees. He began teaching science at Wilson Junior High School in 1962 and moved to Southside High School in 1972. In addition to teaching, he coached football, wrestling and then took over boys/girls swimming until his retirement in 2006. In 2004, he was awarded the science teacher of the year. During his teaching years, he worked with Suburban Turf and Landscape during the summer (30 yrs). After retirement, John helped manage Nassau Swim Club and was a substitute teacher with the Muncie Community Schools, with his favorite place being the YOC. He enjoyed working in his yard, boating at Burt Lake (Northern Michigan), playing tennis at the Muncie YMCA and his membership with the Muncie Exchange Club. He will miss his many friends there. No calling hours - cremation - in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Orchard Park Presbyterian church (1605 E 106th St, Indy) or Grace Care Center (5504 E 146th St, Noblesville). A private family celebration will be held at a later date.
