John Sherman Pohl, 307 W 4th Street,
Boone, Iowa, went home into the arms of Jesus, with his wife Sharon by his side, on August 22, 2025. He had been a resident in the nursing facility at Eastern Star Masonic Home for the past seven months with the best of care. John was born February 1, 1940, in
Boone, Iowa, the son of Sherman and Irene Pohl.
John attended Jordan Consolidated School and United Community High School, where he graduated in 1958. From there, he continued farming with his father and bought into the machinery. John fed cattle for a few years and then switched to farrowing pigs on their farm east of Boone. John's dad did custom corn shelling, so John bought a truck for hauling the corn where it needed to go.

The couple were active members of First United Methodist Church in Boone through the years, serving on various Boards, Committees, and numerous other activities. In August 2023, they attended First Baptist Church in Boone (where Sharon served as church secretary for 11 years) and became members through baptismal immersion on Easter Sunday, 2025.
Being a very humble and ambitious man, John was presented The Outstanding Young Farmer of Boone County award in 1974. He also received Outstanding Achievement in the production of com in 1984 and 1985.
John managed to find employment during the winter months. His various jobs included carpentry with the Ahrens Brothers, helping build United Community High School, driving a bulk milk truck, driving a gravel truck for Anderson/Rosengreen, Boone Case Implement, assembling machinery, and moving snow in Ames/Boone parking lots.
John also served on the Farmer's Coop Elevator/Livestock Company Board of Directors, the Boone County Pork Producers as Vice President, the Boone County Beef Producers, the Boone County Extension Service, and the United Community School Board.
In later years, John was hired by Greg Johnson to drive a Semi for a few years, hauling grain from various farmsteads to Des Moines and the surrounding areas. John also drove for Boone County Transportation for several years.
