John Pouncey age 69 of Alvin, Texas, passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2023, in Amarillo, Texas while traveling home from a trip to Colorado with his family. John was born on April 10, 1954, in Alvin, Texas to John and Mabel Pouncey. John was one of twelve children. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Cecil, Roy Lee, Emmit, Ronald, and Tommy, and his little sister Brenda.
John is survived by his son James Pouncey; his daughter Heather Newstead and husband Steven; sisters, Patricia Baker and husband Richard, Wanda Lambright, Carolyn Smith, Sharon Pouncey; brother, Donald Pouncey; grandchildren, Emerson, Davis, Jayden, and Zoe.
John was a master craftsman and owned a successful home construction and remodeling business for many years. He was an extremely dedicated and dependable worker and most of his business was earned through loyal customers. John was always creating and working with his hands, and he passed these valuable skills on to his son. Over the years, he enjoyed re-building and customizing motorcycles, cars, and surfboards, as well as highlighting his beautiful carpentry skills in customer's homes over the years.
John was so proud of his family and friends and was fiercely protective of them. He was a lover of nature and all living things. His love of the water began at a young age with Sunday trips to the beach with his parents and brothers and sisters. John was a well-known Texas surfer and would chase the waves wherever he could find them with his son and friends in the surfing community. The Gulf Coast was always home, and he enjoyed surfing and competing at various spots along the coast, but he also ventured out with his son and mutual friends to discover a few favorite locations in Florida, California, Hawaii, Mexico, and Costa Rica. He found a place very close to his heart in La Ticla, Mexico, he would visit often and make memories that would last forever. His love of the water allowed him to foster lifelong friendships and to form lasting connections with his son and grandkids as he taught them to surf, fish, and love and respect the water.
John was a disciplined go-getter, but he also had an endearing and playful, witty side. Throughout his life, he was a bit of a thrill seeker and would climb, jump, and speed on surfboards, motorcycles, cars, boats, and planes. He always had a project or two going in the workshop. Later in life, he learned to enjoy the simple things such as sharing pictures of the birds and flowers in his yard, enjoying the outdoors and feeling the sun on his skin, listening to and sharing music with his kids and grandkids, and enjoying and sneaking sweet treats with them. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He was truly one of a kind!
A memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Scott Funeral Home with a service starting at 5:00 PM.
