John Powell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 14 to Jun. 17, 2023.
In memory of our beloved husband, brother, cousin and friend who passed away at The James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio from complications of leukemia.

Known early on as Steve, he was born in Greenville, Ohio to John Stull Powell and Jeanne Evelyn Keever Powell. Steve graduated from Greenville High School in 1974 and attended Columbus Barber College in the early 80s. He then moved to New York City and began his successful 23-year career in hair styling. Also while in New York Steve met his future spouse Doug and began using his official first name of John. Doug and John moved to Columbus, Ohio where John ran his hair salon "Hello Gorgeous!"

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.

John is survived by his spouse of 28 years, Doug Wunsch, sister Dana Kathleen Powell Boomershine (Tedd) and cousins Pam (Harold) Hamilton, Sharon (Jim) Perks and Gale (Diane) Pence and special extended family Judy Munn, Candy Price Zimmerman, Joe Haywood, George Rivera and Gerrie Wright.

John will be remembered as a true, kind and loyal friend who loved life so compassionately. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and shopping at thrift stores which he called his "therapy". John also had a fantastic sense of humor and a wonderful contagious laugh. He could light up a room!!

Family would like to extend a sincere thanks to all for their compassion, comfort and support during his extended illnesses.

A remembrance get-together celebrating the life of John will be held at a later date.

In remembrance of John's life please consider planting a red flower (his favorite color) in your garden or donating to a charity of your choice.
