John Alan Russell, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2024, at Sheffield Bay, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 9, 1935, in Munger, Michigan, to the late Glen and Nora (Haselbeck) Russell.
John lived a full and vibrant life filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering dedication to his family. John's life was one of partnership and devotion, as he married the love of his life, Barbara Jean Gromaski, on November 5, 1955, at St. Mary's Nine Mile Catholic Church. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, and they celebrated 65 joyous years together before Barbara's passing on January 14, 2021. The legacy of their union lives on through their loving children, Pamela (Kenneth) Ayers, Michael (Ann) Russell, Mark (Kathy) Russell, and Kevin (Amy) Russell, as well as their cherished grandchildren: Kenny (Wendi) Ayers, Ashley (Adam) Kanuszewski, Jera Klimek, Stephen (Jennifer) Russell, Michelle (Cody) Firman, Kristyn Russell, Matthew Russell, Jonathan (Alyssa) Russell, Andrew Russell, Justin Russell and Hayley Russell and 10 great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to John's life. John's is survived by his sister Myra Sargent; brother-in-law Charlie Cooper; in-laws George (Norma) Gromaski, Dorothy (Bob) Kissane, Gail Gromaski, and Bob (Kathy) Gromaski; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Glen (June) Russell, Mae (Pete) Stepaniak, Gordon (Marian) Russell, Jeanette Baumgart, and Lynn Cooper along with brothers-in-law Bill Sargent and Dick Gromaski.
A proud graduate of Pinconning Area High School, class of 1952. John was a man of many talents, he built a career as a journeyman carpenter and retired from Dow Corning in 1992. His craftsmanship and work ethic were widely respected, and his skills were a source of pride and accomplishment throughout his life. John's deep faith was reflected in his lifelong commitment to St. Anne Catholic Church, where he was a devoted member. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding him in all his endeavors and providing comfort and strength in times of need. An avid outdoorsman, John found solace in the simple pleasures of hunting and fishing, embracing the beauty of nature and the tranquility it offered. His creativity shone brightly in his wood shop, where he spent countless hours crafting and building. These tangible expressions of his talent and imagination are treasured by all who were lucky enough to receive them. John's friendly and loving nature was evident in his daily interactions. He enjoyed his golf cart trips around the neighborhood, stopping to visit family and friends, sharing stories, and going for rides making memories. His presence was a source of happiness and warmth, and he will be remembered for his easy smile and willingness to lend a helping hand. Above all, John cherished the time spent with his family and grandchildren, understanding that these moments were the true treasures of his life. His friendly demeanor, his handy skills, and his loving heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
