John C. Settle, Jr. "Junnie," 84, of Wilmore, went to rest in the arms of his Lord on May 24, 2024. He was the husband of Evalina K. Settle for over 65 years.
He was born in Louisville, KY to Rose Mary (Wills) Settle and John C. Settle, Sr. He grew up in the Portland community with his brothers and sister.
He joined the Navy in 1957, at age 17. John married Evalina Kremer in 1958 and they resided in Norfolk, VA until he left the Navy and they made their home in New Albany, IN where the family that began with Elizabeth, grew to include Anna and then son, John. He was employed by LG&E as a lineman and foreman and attended college at a local Purdue campus.
In 1972, the family moved to Wilmore, the place where he would become truly rooted in the church and community. He considered these fellow church members, neighbors, friends, and co-workers, as valued as his own family, whom he loved with all of his heart.
He worked at KY Utilities, later as Lexington Mall facilities director, and then became a Realtor with Rector Hayden, before opening Settle Realty.
He enjoyed playing and talking golf with his son John, who was so dear to him. He enjoyed just spending time with his daughters, particularly when the visit included a home-cooked meal or baked goodies. He loved watching PGA events and any and all other sports with his younger brother, Jimmy, who he also considered his best friend.
His yard was one of his favorite places and there was always plenty to do. Mowing, tree-trimming and lots of strategic mole-trapping; it became almost a hobby. He became "PoPo" to his grandchildren and never tired of their entertaining "shenanigans."
He was an Elder in the Wilmore Presbyterian Church and always made the most of missions opportunities over the years. His ability to spark friendships, serve others, and care for those in need had no limits.
He was preceded in death by his siblings: Fred Settle, Jerry Settle, Pearl Ashley, and James Settle. Also by twin great-granddaughters Emily and Olivia Collins.
He is survived by his wife, whom he has lovingly cared for through the years, daughters Elizabeth Collins and Anna Schick, along with her husband Byron Schick (his "bonus son"), and son, John H. Settle. Also left to cherish his memory are grandchildren, James Collins, Sterling Schick, Elizabeth (Greg) Ramey, Bailie Gardner, Robert Collins, Zach (Hana) Settle, Catey Settle and Sydney (Aaron) Whitaker, along with great-grandchildren: Addison, Luke, Riley, Evan and Jasper.
The family will greet friends at Wilmore Presbyterian Church on Friday, June 21 from 5-7 pm and on Saturday, June 22 from 9:30 to 10:30am, prior to the service.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 22 at 11:00 at the Wilmore Presbyterian Church.
The interment of his ashes will be at Camp Nelson National Cemetery with Military Honors on Monday, June 24 at 10:00am.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Wilmore Presbyterian Church or the Gary Sinise Foundation.
This obituary was lovingly submitted by John's family. Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home extends our deepest sympathy to the Settle Family.

"Junnie" and his wife, Evalina, were cherished lifelong friends of Bob Stevens and his late wife, Betsy, of South Carolina. These four enjoyed countless visits with one another. No one cooked a homemade family meal better than Evalina. Junnie was an avid hunter and fisherman. Road trips to Kentucky and South Carolina were commonplace for the Settles and the Stevens. Shakertown was a favorite place to gather in Kentucky. The low country of South Carolina provided a haven for fishing and shrimping. Junnie was fun and very pleasant to be around. His laugh was contagious! He regaled many of us with stories of his firsthand experiences throughout his adventurous life. Junnie enjoyed sharing his knowledge along with an eager willingness to help others, especially his beloved family and close friends. Even so, simply his mere presence blessed many people for which we´re all very thankful.
