John Shannon Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 14, 2025.
In loving memory of John Max Shannon Sr.

February 28, 1935 - August 11, 2025

John was a devoted family man, a lifelong farmer and rancher, and a true cowboy. He died peacefully on August 11, 2025, at the age of 90. He lived his life by the code of a true cowboy, working hard from before dawn until well after dark most nights. He was a man of faith. He hardly missed a Sunday before the decline of his and his wife's health earlier this year. John didn't believe in sugarcoating anything; he told it how it was and lived life as a devoted man of faith.

John is preceded in death by his parents, James Edgar and Edna Ponder Shannon, Sr. and his siblings, Lillian Woods, Margret Williams, Maurine Jackson, James E (Jimmy )Shannon, Wayne Shannon, Gene Shannon, and Jerry Shannon. He is survived by his youngest sister, Lynette King.

John is also survived by his wife of 71 years, Wynona Morgenroth Shannon, and their two children: son John (Chip) Shannon Jr. (Marilyn) and daughter Kristi Manning; grandchildren John J. Shannon (Jennifer), Laura Haga (Brad), Jackie Ammann (Dwayne), Kirby Martin (Jennifer), Somer Martin, and Marcus Martin (Jennifer). John had three grandsons who all married a Jennifer; he always loved that he only had to remember one name. However, the mailman had four Johns all on the same road.

He was blessed with twenty great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews and their children.

John was a life member of the Houston Stock Show where he worked with the cattle show for many years.

His favorite quote from the Bible is:"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything." Philippians 4:6
