I knew him as Commander Dugan Shipway. I haven't seen him in 35 years or so, but I never forgot his name. He was my neighbor and help launch one of my life's favorite hobbies, downhill skiing. The Commander sold me my first pair of skis, Olin Mark IV's. I earned them, actually, by cutting his (square) yard (diagonally) for the summer of '86. I was just looking at those skis last night and wondered what became of my old friend. Sail on and Godspeed.

I'm proud to have known John before he was Dugan, meeting him at the University of Louisville's Speed School. While our paths never crossed until the last few years, it seemed he never changed. He retained his sense of humor and bonds of friendship with many. We'll miss his insight and devotion to God and country, Farewell old friend.

It started 62.5 years ago at the University of Louisville. We connected through Theta Tau Fraternity, the NROTC Training Unit, and our Chemical Engineering major. It developed into a strong and lasting friendship with many connections after graduation. As one of our fraternity brothers said: "We are all diminished by Dugan's passing. RIP good and constant friend.

To Lynn and the Shipway Family our sincere condolences. I will always remember John as a special classmate during our time together in Chemical Engineering at Univ of Louisville during the 1960´s. It was John´s dry sense of humor that helped us get through difficult academic classes with some of our "interesting" professors. I will always remember these times. RIP John!

Dugan Shipway was the best mentor I ever had when I reported aboard the USS Swordfish SSN 579 in July 1975. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Our crew hosted Admiral Shipway and Lynn for an underway onboard USS WYOMING shortly before he retired from active duty in the Navy. It was a memorable voyage and an honor to recognize his service to the Navy and wonderful for Lynn to visit one of the ships he helped oversee.

A great friend and classmate. CVCS '1960. Our last reunion in July of 2022, will stick with me forever. Not a major milestone, but the 80th year for most of us.
I remember Dugan was an umpire one year for the school girls softball team. My first attempt as a pitcher. not knowing much I had the batter at 2 n 3. Dugan was the pitching umpire and stood right behind me, as I wound up I heard a soft voice say "Slow it down". I did, and " Struck her Out." Won the game. I would never have known what to do with out him.
Rest in peace, Dugan, we will not forget you.

NAVSEA was my 1st DC assignment and Admiral Shipway was 1st Admiral I worked for on a daily basis. I just remember how 'Larger than Life' he was to me. I remember to this day a lesson he taught me; "Always tell the whole truth because the whole truth is easier to remember."

Godspeed Admiral Shipway.
