John James Sweeney, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on January 31, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on December 31, 1944, in Evanston, Illinois, John was a man of great accomplishments and a source of inspiration to his family and friends.
John’s educational journey was marked by his talent as a gifted athlete. He attended Rich East High School, where he excelled in sports and earned a college basketball scholarship. He began his studies at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming, before transferring to Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska, where he continued to nurture his athletic abilities.
Professionally, John dedicated his life to sales, establishing a successful career as a distributor. He first worked with Latex Modifications Incorporated, then moved on to BASF and Hydro-Technologies INC. John retired in 2015 at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and determination.
John was not only a businessman but also a passionate golfer and a long-time member of Broadmoor Country Club. His love for the game was reflected in his impressive record, achieving seven hole-in-ones throughout his golfing career, a testament to his skill and dedication to the sport.
Above all, John was a devoted family man. He took immense pride in his five grandchildren, who brought him untold joy and happiness. His love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Catherine Bruno Sweeney; his children, Kelly Morales, Shannon Deganutti, and Scott Sweeney; and his five grandchildren, Dominic, Zachary Deganutti, Brooks, Maria, and Peter Morales. His memory will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
In remembrance of John's successful fight against pancreatic cancer, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or Shriners Children's Hospitals.
