John Swetites

John Joseph Swetits III, born on October 1, 1942, in Passaic, N.J., passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 18, 2026 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Joseph Swetits, Jr. and Helen Merten Swetits, his daughter Maggie Swetits Maldonado, and his stepdaughter Caroline Henry. John leaves behind a loving family who cherished him deeply. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ann Henry Swetits of Virginia Beach, daughter Mary Swetits of Norfolk, sons Rob Swetits of Newport News and Clark (Swetits) Campbell and wife Leslie of Chesapeake, stepsons Chris Henry of Chesapeake and Patrick Henry of Virginia Beach, granddaughter Jennifer Swetits of Norfolk, sister Patricia Brusko of Tom's River, NJ, and brother Robert Swetits and wife Debra of Florham Park, NJ; and many more family and friends who will miss him dearly.

A dedicated educator, John devoted his career to the field of mathematics, sharing his knowledge and passion as a respected mathematics professor. His commitment to education and his students left a lasting impact on many lives. He retired after teaching for 38 years at Old Dominion University.

John's warmth, wisdom, and gentle spirit will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate John's life will be held on March 4th at 2:00 PM at Altmeyer Funeral Homes-Southside Chapel, located at 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach.
