John Szurko, Jr. Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

John R. Szurko Jr. of Edison, a devoted family man and entrepreneurial spirit, passed away at the age of 81 years old on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025.

John was born in Rahway in 1944 but he grew up in Woodbridge his entire life. He attended Woodbridge High School in 1962 and received a football scholarship to Louisiana State University. After his father fell ill, he returned home and attended Seton Hall University, earning his Undergraduate degree in Business Administration.

John truly loved making money and building a life full of opportunity, he had many careers throughout his lifetime. Armed with an impressive number of certifications, he explored countless professions and never shied away from learning something new or taking on a fresh challenge. Whether working as a stock broker to managing big-picture projects, he approached every job with ambition and pride.

Most recently, John found his greatest professional joy as a land developer and home builder through his own company, Heritage Properties, where he turned vision into structure and ideas into homes.

But above all his accomplishments, John's greatest legacy is the love he gave to his family. A deeply loyal and generous husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, he made it a point to show up for the people he loved. For him, family always came first.

John was preceded in death by his father, John Sr., and his mother, Mary, and his brother, Richard.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Pamela, of Edison; his son, Victor Calantoni, and his wife, Karen of Metuchen; and his two grandsons: Thomas Leo Calantoni and Nicholas James Calantoni and his daughter, Melissa Ruling of Florida.

The visitation will take place on Friday, August 8th, 2025, from 4-8 pm, at Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave. (Rt.27), Metuchen. The Funeral will begin at the Funeral Home on Saturday, August 9th, 2025, at 8:30am followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00am, at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral, Metuchen. Interment will be at St. James Cemetery in Woodbridge.
