John Edward Thornton was born to the late John and Ruby Thornton in Atlanta, Georgia, on February 4, 1954. John gave his life to Christ at an early age and remained steadfast in his faith throughout his life. His relationship with the Lord shaped his values, guided his work ethic, and defined how he loved his family and community. One of John's most memorable traits was his infectious sense of humor and a joyful spirit. He had a way of putting people at ease. Whether through a well-timed joke or a word of encouragement, John was a source of light to all who knew him. John loved watching WWE, especially his favorite wrestler, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and he never missed a chance to cheer on his hometown sports teams. He was a proud Atlantan and top-grade "trash talker", especially on the basketball court! A fan of classic TV, John could often be found watching Perry Mason, Matlock, or Murder, She Wrote every day. He also found joy in cooking, listening to gospel artist Ron Kenoly, and supporting college education the best way he knew how: faithfully buying scratch-off lottery tickets. John was a hard worker and a self-proclaimed hustler. He often said, "I make money - money don't make me," a phrase that reflected both his work ethic and his independence. He believed in earning his way and doing it with pride. Over the years, John worked as a Maintenance Supervisor at The Fountainview Center for Alzheimer's Disease, Sheltering Arms Dorothy Arkwright Center, and the Butler Street YMCA-all in Atlanta, Georgia. Later, he proudly joined his son James Thornton's company, Cupid Disposal, where he served as a supervisor, bringing wisdom, reliability, and laughter to the workplace. John is survived by his four children La'Teecha Davis; John Thornton II (Letitia), Matthew Thornton (Malika), and James Thornton; He also leaves behind his beloved sisters, Shirley Antoine (Narcisse) and Irma McClain; his treasured Grandchildren, Jalia Thornton, Landon Thornton, and Mason Thornton; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, extended family and friends who will deeply miss him. John's legacy lives on through the lessons he taught, the laugher he shared, and the love he gave so freely. He fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith – now he rests in God's eternal care. Services entrusted to Gregory B. Levett & Sons Funeral Home, 4347 Flat Shoals Parkway, Decatur, GA 30034.
