John L. Wiley, age 98, of Erie, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2022.
He was born in Erie on April 2, 1924 a son of the late John F and Mary Elizabeth Sopp Wiley.
John went to Saint John's Grade School and Academy High School where he excelled in football. He was pulled out of high school in his senior year to serve in WWIl in the Army Air Corps. After the war, John worked with his father building houses and cabinetry. He went on to work 36 years at the American Sterilizer. After retiring, he worked at the Brabender Golf Course.
He served as an Usher at Sacred Heart Church, Blessed Sacrament Church and Our Lady of Peace Church where he was a founding parishioner.
John was all about sports. He participated in multiple softball and golf leagues. He watched his favorite teams, the Boston Red Sox, NY Giants and the University of Pittsburgh on tv while drinking a beer. In his retirement, he continued working, building cupboards and cabinets for friends and family and spent countless hours helping his son remodel the farm House and cutting the grass, which he loved to do. Thanks dad!
Thank you to Saint Many's caregivers who treated him like family and to Nancy Wiley for being there at the right time.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Rita M. Brabender Wiley, his second wife, Virginia Loesch Wiley, a son, Lance Huster and sisters, Gertrude, Mary Elizabeth and Madelyn and brothers, John, Frederick, William, David and Thomas.
