John Wintermute Obituary

John Steven Wintermute
Born: October 30, 1946 in LaGrange, IL
Died: January 10, 2025 in Leland, MI
John Steven Wintermute, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, competitor and prankster, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025 at the age of 78.
Born on October 30, 1946 to Roy and Betty Wintermute, John grew up in LaGrange, Illinois, where he met his lifetime love, Linda Livingston, at Cossitt School. They later attended Lyon's Township Highschool. A gifted athlete, he played football for the University of Minnesota, proudly contributing to the Golden Gophers' 1967 Big Ten Championship Team.
John shared more than 50 wonderful years of marriage with his late wife Linda, whose love and adventurous spirit enriched his life immeasurably. Together they raised two daughters, Libby Stanton Ralph (Dylan) and Jennifer Kareck (David), and delighted in their four grandchildren: Cooper Stanton, Henry Stanton, Owen Kareck, and Tatum Kareck.
A man of quiet strength, kindness, and humor, John enjoyed summers at the cottage in Palisades Park, sailing, tennis, Golden Retrievers and the company of family and friends. John is survived by his sister Cindy Kearin, and brother Bob Wintermute (Nancy). He will be greeted in heaven by his wife Linda, niece Kelly Livingston Stroden, dear friend Ray Kropp, and godson Xander Kropp, among others.
A service to celebrate John's life with be held at 2:00pm on Friday, February 21, 2025, at The First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange, where he and Linda were married, with a reception to follow at The Elm in La Grange.
In lieu of flowers, we suggest taking your family on vacation, someplace warm. It's what John and Linda would have done.
He will be deeply missed by all who know and loved him.

I have great childhood memories of John & Bob having grown up on the 400 block of South Seventh Avenue. John was 6 years older than me but he and Bob let me play basketball with them and were like older brothers. I never knew either after those days but thanks to both for making us little kids on the block feel included.

I´m sorry for your loss and hope the entire reaches of the Wintermute family find peace.

I have such wonderful memories of being at Palisades with the wintermute family as a kid.
Johnny´s mom Betty would sit on the beach with us and knit, Johnny would run up and down the dunes behind the cottages, staying fit for football season. At our 25th LT reunion, I was lucky to dance with the handsome high school boy I always had a crush on and share memories of his mom and dad. I am thankful to have such sweet memories of him!
Love to you, Bobby and Cindy, and I´m so sorry for your loss of your brother.

I´ve known `Johnny´ since 2nd grade, also @ Cossitt school. He was everything anyone says. Friendly, kind & fun to be with. My Dad announced the Little League games where Johnny´s team, coached by his dad, played. The Wintermute family contributed so much to LaGrange, and Johnny was just a heck of a great guy.
God bless & peace to his family.
